The Currency of Ecuador

The US Dollar is the official currency of the United States –where it is minted- but also of other countries such as Ecuador, El Salvador or Zimbabwe. Moreover, the US dollar is the most common currency used by tourists.

After a massive banking crisis hit the country, Ecuador set the US dollar as legal tender in in 1999.

Before the country adopted the Dollar as official currency, during the term of President Jamil Mahuad, the official currency was the sucre. In order to introduce the Dollar in the country, it was necessary to carry out a process that consisted of freezing banking accounts to then replace this money with the new national currency: the Dollar.

Countries using US Dollar

Even though the US Dollar is accepted in a number of countries, only eight really use it as legal tender. These countries are the United States of America, Ecuador, El Salvador, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, West Timor and Zimbabwe.

Current US Dollar Coins and Banknotes

There are currently five different denominations of the US Dollar, which have been nicknamed:

  • 1 cent: penny
  • 5 cents: nickel
  • 10 cents: dime
  • 25 cents: quarter
  • 50 cents: half dollar

Regarding banknotes, there are seven denominations: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollars.
